Why should I use facial essences?
Main function of essences is to hydrate the skin. As such, you can expect high concentration of active ingredients, antioxidants and humectants.
Korean cosmetic companies which put facial essences on the beauty map suggest that our skin is like a sponge – when wet, it becomes more absorbent. You drench your skin with moisture when you use facial essence which allows for better absorption of subsequent products. Given its watery consistency, facial essences are perfect for layering the products.
How do I use facial essences?
You can simply lightly press it on your skin. There are essences that come in spray bottles as well which makes it easier to apply.
Personal take on essences: I am fairly conflicted about use of essences and my main reservation comes from fear of essences being just a marketing trick. Facial essences are relatively recent invention. Even though many bloggers praise the results of using facial essences, there seems to be very little information available and even that is mostly presented by Korean companies. That being said, the more I read, the more it appears that dehydrated / poorly hydrated skin is the reason we “misdiagnose” our skin type and consequently choose skincare products unsuitable for our skin’s needs. We often mistaken dry skin type for chronic skin dehydration. Overproduction of sebum is often skin’s cry for help due to dehydration as well. Since hydration is of critical importance, I will approach facial essences with an open mind. I will make my final decision based on the results I see.
